On August 8, 2005, President Bush signed into law H.R. 6, the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Among its many provisions was legislations encouraging energy efficiency and conservation in electrical appliances. Specifically on ceiling fans, the socket size of pre-installed uplights and downlights was reduced from a "medium" socket (E26) (the standard socket used in a table or floor lamp) to candelabra (E12)and/or intermediate base sockets (E17).
EPACT applies to any ceiling fans or light kits that are manufactured or received into the country by 12/31/06. This means that our ceiling fan manufacturers may still have some fans in inventory that use the older bulb design. There is no reason to worry, however, as these do not fall under the requirements of the act. We do encourage the use of compact fluorescent bulbs on those fixtures with the medium-base socket (E26), as recommended by Energy Star Guidelines.
The following pictures are approximately to scale:

A candelabra base (E12) is approximately 1/2" wide.

An intermediate base (E17) is approximately 11/16" wide.

These compare with a standard medium based (E26) which is approximately 1 1/16" wide.
